BlackBerry Bold 9000 Review

Overview

One of the Finest QWERTY Phones

Overview of Blackberry Bold 9000

BlackBerry Bold 9000 was released in India in the third quarter of 2008. The launch almost did not come smooth-sailing before that as the government was holding it back due to some security concerns but luckily for smart phone enthusiasts, BlackBerry did overcome the obstacle and is now making our lives better with enhanced features that its predecessors failed to deliver. Read on to know more about these otherwise well-received fixes.

Blackberry Bold 9000 Design and Build Quality

Just looking at BlackBerry Bold 9000’s glossy piano black front and leather back finish tells you that they mean business. But its stylish and intuitive design is not just plain aesthetics. If you remember finding it difficult to type on previous BlackBerry models because the full QWERTY keypad was really small for your fingers, then you will find the Bold 9000 really comfortable to use. The keypad buttons are much bigger and well-defined. Other additional build features include the four buttons on top of the keypad which are used for answering and ending calls, going to the menu interface, the back and exit button and the signature BlackBerry trackball navigation to easily select applications from the menu.

On the side of the really slim handset are buttons for earpiece volume and access to the camera. But these are just the usual functionality inherent to a smart phone. What BlackBerry did to this device that separates it from competitor in terms of design and build quality is the magnet-based key lock. The handset comes with a case with the same magnet that the phone has and as soon as those magnets meet, the phone keys automatically lock down and the screen goes on a hibernate mode. This will save you battery life and prevents accidental dialing. If there’s any build issues you have to watch for, that would be the battery cover which tends to easily lose the spring that is supposed to secure it. Same issue can be gleaned from the microSD slot cover which does not seem to fit snugly.

Blackberry Bold 9000 Camera and Image Quality

It is a little disappointing that BlackBerry Bold 9000 has not really improved on the performance of its built-in cameras. You still have to settle with its two megapixel sensor. Nonetheless, the devise would still churn out a not-so-bad image quality. Besides, the LED flash really works wonders in dark settings.

Audio Quality

When it comes to audio playback, BlackBerry chose to keep it simple and generic with a 3.5 mm headphone jack and the usual playback options that a handset has. But what separates it from the rest is that it does the job pretty awesome. You could tell by the quality of its loudspeaker playback which does not seem to change even if you turn up the volume to its maximum.

Web Browser and Applications

People choose BlackBerry for the convenience of its email application. In this regard, the previous Curve models and the BlackBerry Bold 9000 are really similar. But what makes the new model better is the enhanced web browsing experience that previous handsets failed to give. Before Bold 9000, BlackBerry’s default web browser was really bad you had to download Opera Mini to enjoy connecting to the internet but that problem is all fixed now. BlackBerry Bold 9000’s new web browser is comparable to other smart phones like the iPhone where you can actually browse websites on a full page setting just like when using a PC. You can simply zoom in on parts that are unclear using the cursor and the trackball.
