Maxx AX9Z RACE Review

Overview

Feature-rich Smartphone

Maxx AX9Z is the dual SIM smartphone launched by Maxx.

Maxx AX9Z Design and Build Quality

Maxx AX9Z is only available in white colour and catches dirt easily. It has a touch screen of 5.3 inches which increases its dimensions to up to 148.5 x 78 x 10.5mm. The phone is not lightweight by any standards but still not very uncomfortable to use. The battery life of the phone will last you about 5 hours with normal use, which is very less by smartphone standards.

User Interface and Comfort to Use Maxx AX9Z

The phone is an Android OS based phone and runs on Jellybean OS The phone has 512 MB of RAM and has a dual core processor (1.2GHz Cortex Dual core A9 MTK 6577). The internal memory is 4GB, which can be expanded to 32GB with a Micro SD card. The phone’s UI is not very comfortable to use but still is easy to navigate and use. We liked the home screen the inbuilt apps. The phone has the usual Proximity sensors, Accelerometer and Light sensors and also has a G sensor that is the gravity sensor, which knows instantly when you turn the phone left/right or upside down. The display supports 5-point multi touch with gives the screen more functionality. qHD display of AX9Z RACE gives a resolution of 960 X 540 pixels, which gives pictures, videos and email the clarity that they ask for. However, the brightness of the screen leaves a lot to be desired.

Telephony and Phonebook

The phone is dual SIM (3G/GSM+GSM) and switches between the modes very fast. The phone book has virtually unlimited storage capacity. Voice calling is enabled and you can add photos of contacts. Search is easy and social media integration is very convenient. Call calling quality is good but noise cancellation in crowded places is poor.

Messaging and Emails

SMS, MMS, Email are the usual facilities available on the phone. The keyboard on the phone is perfectly adequate for typing messages and emails. The large screen means that you can read your email better without having to scroll after every five sentences.

Gallery, Photo Viewer and Video Player

The phone although has a big screen for watching photos and videos the quality of the screen itself is not too great. The photo viewer has some editing features but not much. The video player will play MP4, 3GP, AVI, MKV and MOV which is great.

Maxx AX9Z Music Player and FM Radio

The music from the phone is good but the earphones that come with the device are not so good. The FM radio is good but the phone requires the ear phones to be connected at all times to listen to FM. The basic sorting options for music are available on the phone.

Maxx AX9Z Camera and Image Quality

The phone has two cameras one is an 8MP rear one and other is a 2MP front one. The back camera has many interesting features like Anti flicker, Auto-focus and Touch to focus. The flash is LED> Picture resolution from the back camera is 3264 X 2448 pixels. The photos come out OK but are not great. The front camera does not have any features but is very good for voice and video chats.

Video Camera and Video Quality

The video camera of the phone disappoints as it only records in VGA formats. The quality is very basic for mobile phones.

Maxx AX9Z Connectivity Options

The connectivity options on the phone include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, and 3G. The connectivity speed is decent but if you have two connections going on at the same time, you might find it difficult to work faster. Bluetooth, Bluetooth tethering, and USB tethering are some of the things that we liked.

Organiser and Other Utility Tools

The organiser section of the phone contains the usual file manager, alarm clock, calendar, and calculator. Documents to go are another useful feature on the phone.

Web Browser and Applications

The android browser is very smooth and the zoom and text wrap features work very well. The pre-loaded applications on the phone include Facebook Chat, WhatsApp, Nimbuzz, Twitter and last but not the least Google Play Store

Google Maps and GPS

GPS works very well on the phone and Google maps come in very handy if you are stuck somewhere.

Value for Money

The pricing of the phone starts at INR 11500 (approx., may vary), which is quite on the plus side for a phone with only 512MB of RAM, low quality screen and poor video recording.

Verdict

We would rate this phone a 3.5 out of 5 stars for its poor battery life, low memory and poor multimedia features.
