Micromax A115 Canvas 3D Review

Overview

Affordable 3D Phone

Overview

Micromax has been bringing new phones in the market in quick succession in the last few years. The pricing of the phones is very competitive but the quality of the phones is not very good.

Micromax A115 Canvas 3D Design and Build Quality

With Micromax A115 Canvas 3D the company has tried to make a jump to the high-end naked eye 3D devices. The phone however is 11mm thick and weighs 188grams which is quite heavy. It will feel like a weight in your pocket. The body of the phone has a matt finish, which looks very classy. The buttons at the sides of the phone give a poor quality feeling. Both the SIM card slots are located under the battery. The battery of the phone will last for about 5 hours with mild operations, which is very less for a 3D smartphone.

User Interface and Comfort to Use Micromax A115 Canvas 3D

The CPU of the phone is 1GHZ and RAM is 512 MB. With more power phones available in the market, this phone is disappointing. Android Jellybean OS runs smoothly but we wish the phone would have been faster. 480 x 800 is the resolution of the 5-inch screen, which means that it does not have the sharpness that you desire from a phone. The phone has 5 customizable screens, which gives you the freedom to make it appear the way you want.

3D Viewing

The selling point of the phone is its 3D capabilities, which are very disappointing. The phone uses parallax barrier method to create the 3D effect. The screen is 5 inch TFT. The 3D can only be viewed in the landscape mode and only from one angle. If you move your eyes or shift position then you will lose the effect. Also if you try to view it for long times then you will get headaches and the display strain the eye. It is comfortable for short time viewing. The existing imaging can be converted to 3D and the depth can be adjusted. 3D photo capturing and is possible but the video recordings have a minor stutter. The phone has a dedicated 3D space, which hosts difference apps for D content including 3D games, 3D online videos on YouTube, and 3D pictures, and videos.

Telephony and Phonebook

The phone is dual SIM (GSM+GSM). The call quality is decent and phonebook can be accessed through the widgets.

Messaging and Emails

Messaging capabilities on the phone have the added the ability to add media content, contacts and audio clips directly to the message.

Gallery, Photo Viewer and Video Player

The gallery of the phone contains the photo viewer, file manager, video player, and games. Gaming is decent on the phone but the lack of good screen resolution takes some of the fun out of it. The photo viewer is standard and the options are limited. Video player of the phone is capable of playing 3D 1080p videos but the video play back is not up to the mark. The video stutters a lot and the aspect ratio is way off. If you use in 3D mode you might be able to get some decent views. The video player plays AVI and .MOV videos

Micromax A115 Canvas 3D Music Player and FM Radio

The phone comes with an inbuilt FM radio and universal music player. The music quality is just passable.

Micromax A115 Canvas 3D Camera and Image Quality

The rear camera of the phone is 5MP with dual flash. You can take 3D photos from the camera. Outdoor shots look good but rest all is not worth using. The guide to taking 3D photos by moving the phone horizontally to take two photos and stitching them together took a long time to make sense. We wish that the camera would have been better. The front camera is .3MP which lacks the charm of a having a front facing camera in the phone.

Video Camera and Video Quality

Video recording is very poor on the phone. Videos can only be recorded in 3GP format, which is out-dated nowadays.

Micromax A115 Canvas 3D Connectivity Options

All the basic connectivity options are available on the phone. The most interesting option is the Wireless Input Device app, which lets you configure Bluetooth enabled devices on the phone.

Web Browser and Applications

The browser is Android and runs smoothly but not suitable for very high power operations. Various apps on the device include M! Store, M! Zone+, HookUp, and friends locator app, M! Buddy and a few games (mostly trial versions) including Fruit Devil, Bubble Bash 3, Battleship Connect4, and The Dark Man, Google Now, Google Play store.

Google Maps and GPS

Goggle maps are preinstalled on the phone to help you find your way around easily.

Value for Money

The phone is priced at INR 10000 (approx., may vary) in the Indian market. The price of the phone is low compared to other 3D phones.

Verdict

The phone fails to live up to the standards for 3D, call quality and camera app. We would give the phone a 3.5 star out of 5.
