Smarter Than A Smartphone
Sunday, July 12, 2009Samsung has announced its new Jet S8000 smartphone at the CommunicAsia 2009 and Samsung Unpacked event at London as well as Dubai. Samsung touts the new Jet S8000 as 'smarter than a smartphone'. Packing 800MHz CPU in smartphone started off with Asus P565 and now Jet S8000 features 800MHz Samsung 6410 processor. Samsung Jet S8000 is part of Samsung's Cubic Project that also includes i8000 Omnia II and M8000. Cubic Project is about the cubical-like central button that launches a Cube-like interface. The Motion UI is Samsung's motion recognition engine that allows access to multimedia features by tapping, tilting or flipping the phone.
While Media Gate 3D is the six-sided Cube UI featuring six major multimedia features like Music Player, Photo Album, Video Player, FM Radio, Games and Internet (web browser). The Smart Unlock feature allows unlocking phone and launching menu item/make a call simply by drawing respective alphabet on the touchscreen. Samsung S8000 Jet sports a 800 x 480 resolution 3.1" 16M color AMOLED touchscreen display as well as a 5 megapixel camera complete with dual LED flash (offering Face Detection, Smile Shot, Blink Detection), integrated GPS, full featured video and audio player functionality (including DivX and XviD support).
One of the other strong points of the Jet is the whopping 2GB of memory built into the phone. This will probably be enough for most users, with the capacity to store around 1,000 music tracks, but can be expanded to 16GB with the addition of a microSD card. Samsung's reason for including its proprietary TouchWiz interface is apparently due to trying to keep costs down and make it affordable for consumers. TouchWiz 2.0 user interface gives an unrivalled user experience and includes iconic new features such as motion UI, smart unlock, customisable widget screen, which are all perfect for managing your life at work and at play; giving you what you want, faster than ever before.
Samsung’s Dolfin Internet browser is designed to let users surf the net and access popular websites, especially social networking sites, with ease and speed. The browser enhances the mobile internet experience by allowing users to view up to five web pages simultaneously and bookmark their favourite websites as widgets on the phone’s homepage. A built in ad-blocker, multiple downloading and background downloading feature, and multi-purpose address field, further enhance the experience while Dolfin’s unique one finger zoom enables users to zoom in and out of web pages using only one hand.
If you do need to download, you'll find the 3G HSDPA and WiFi connections to be nice and fast, whether you're watching YouTube videos or just surfing the web. Thanks to the huge screen and the one-finger zoom feature, viewing full web pages is easy. The web browser is very well featured, with support for Flash and even multi-window support. As well as WiFi support, the Jet has Bluetooth and USB, naturally. The 3.5mm audio jack is very welcome too, enabling the use of standard headphones, or the possibility to connect to an external speaker system or a car stereo. A GPS receiver is included too, but no Google Maps.

It's a superfast phone, with a responsive touchscreen interface, plenty of online widgets, an excellent web browser, multi-tasking and a superfast processor to power it all.
