Nokia Lumia 900 Review

Overview

The Sleek and Fast Smartphone

Overview of Nokia Lumia 900

Lumia 900 is Nokia’s juvenile attempt at developing a superior, powerful and high-end smartphone. Lumia 900 is undoubtedly the most stylish and power-packed phone of our times. Sporting the look of an over-sized Lumia 800, this gizmo rubs shoulders with high-end smartphones like Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5.

Design and Feel

Nokia has clearly outdone itself with Lumia 900’s unique, sleek and stylish rectangular design. Nokia Lumia 900 embodies a smart-looking, unibody polycarbonate frame which gives it a classy look. The phone measures 68.5 x 127.8 x 11.5 mm, which makes it slim and easy to fit into pockets. Lumia 900 weighs 160g, which makes it a little bulkier than its contemporary smartphones.

Display of Nokia Lumia 900

Nokia Lumia 900 boasts a resplendent 4.3-inch AMOLED Capacitive Touch Screen display which scales graphics to WVGA resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The AMOLED technology is much better than the TFT LCD technology used in Lumia 610 and 710. The deep black levels augment the quality of rendered images and make them look much more vivid and realistic. The AMOLED display also provides wide-viewing angles. The screen comes protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, which makes it resistant to occasional scratches and extends the durability of the screen. Additionally, the smartphone comes with an inbuilt ambient light sensor, which adjusts the brightness levels of the phone in accordance with the light of the surrounding ambience.

Hardware

Nokia Lumia 900 comes powered by an extremely powerful 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Scorpion processor, which makes the device a pretty lean-mean machine. An additional Adreno 205 graphics processing unit and 512 MB RAM assures butter-smooth performance while operating the phone. The hardware specifications are subtle enough to avoid any jitters while multi-tasking, or playing a high-graphics game.

Sensors

The phone comes equipped with a whole bunch of sensors like 3D accelerometer, proximity sensor, Compass, Gyroscope and Ambient Light sensor. 3D Accelerometer and Gyroscope detect the orientation of the phone, proximity sensor helps in turning off the display while making calls, compass helps in navigation, and ambient light sensor helps in sensing the external light. These intuitive sensors help in enhancing the user-experience, and expand the number of ways in which one can interact with the phone.

Interface of Nokia Lumia 900

Nokia Lumia 900 comes powered by Windows Mango 7.5 (upgradable to 7.8). The Windows interface is extremely pleasant, smooth and intuitive. Unlike Android which allows smartphone manufacturers to mend the software code in their own way and add premium features, Microsoft has decided to keep Windows Mango 7.5 same across different devices. The tiled Windows interface is faster and easier to navigate, when compared to contemporary mobile OS like iOS or Android. The tiles are apps-cum-widgets, which not only read real-time data, but also provide instant access to the applications. The interface provides a potent web-browser, an excellent email-client, supports editing/viewing Office files, and supports lots of apps which can be downloaded from Microsoft Marketplace app store. As a matter of fact, Nokia Lumia 900 comes pre-loaded with several useful apps like Facebook, Twitter, Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive, Mix Radio, and Microsoft Skydrive.

Nokia Lumia 900 Camera

Nokia Lumia 900 integrates a powerful 8 megapixel primary camera with Dual LED flash-light, which allows you to capture mesmerizing photos in crystal-clear quality. The 8 MP Camera shoots 4:3 images in 3264x2448 resolution. The camera comes with 3x digital zoom and several other useful features like Geo-tagging, auto and manual exposure, ISO and white-level tuning and much more. The camera works the best in outdoor lighting. The snaps captured in low-lighting appear shady and require too many post-click corrections. The camera is also capable of recording 720p HD videos at 30 fps. Clearly, 720p recording is an understatement, citing the fact that the likes of S2 and 4S allow Full-HD (1080p) recording. For video calling purposes, Nokia has also provided a decent 1 MP camera in the front.

Storage

Nokia Lumia 900 offers a massive 16 GB of internal memory to store your photos, documents, music and installed apps. There’s no external MMC slot on Lumia 900, which should not be a disappointment as 16 GB is more than enough to carry your favourite apps, videos, photos and music on the go.

Nokia Lumia 900 Battery

Nokia Lumia 900 comes powered by a durable 1830 mAh Li-Ion battery, which promises 8 hours of talk-time on 2G (7 hours on 3G network), and 300 hours of standby-time. As Lumia 900 embodies a unibody design, it does not come with a removable battery. This might disappoint ardent techies who love performing hard-resets, and installing custom ROMs on their gizmos. The battery lasts much better for a high-end smartphone, and should last at least a day on single-charge. However, expect the battery to drain-off quickly if you’re going to stream video over 3G networks, or play games for a prolonged period of time.

Connectivity

When it comes to connectivity, the Lumia 900 lacks almost nothing. Nokia comes powered by wide array of connections like Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, GPRS and EDGE technology, 3G (HSDPA, HSUPDA), Wi-Fi, GPS and micro-USB.

Verdict

Nokia does the trick this time by developing an-state-of-the-art smartphone, but falls short in perfecting the act. Nokia Lumia 900 does enchant us by the looks, the features, and the holistic Windows experience, but the price-tag comes and spoils the party. Nevertheless, if you’re a Windows fan-boy and love large, bright AMOLED screens, do not look any further than Lumia 900. This phone delivers the best windows experience and endows the best looks. If you’re looking to desperately buy an in-budget Windows smartphone, we suggest opting for Lumia 800 instead.
