Gurpurab is the anniversary of a guru's birth or death. Gurpurab in Sikh custom is a celebration of an anniversary related to the lives of Sikh gurus. Ceremony of this day of remembrance is an important feature of Sikh way of life. The term 'Gurpurab' appeared in the time of gurus. It is a combination of word 'Purb' or 'Parva' which means a celebration or festival with the word guru. The important Gurpurab in the Nanakshahi calender are the birth anniversaries of 'Guru Gobind Singh' and 'Guru Nanak' and the martyrdom days of 'Guru Tegh Bahadur' and 'Guru Arjan Dev' and installation of 'Guru Garanth Sahib' at Amritsar in Harimandar. On this day, the 'Guru Garanth Sahib' is read in homes and in Gurudwaras for 48 hours which is called 'Akhand Path' without any interruption. Special assemblies are held in Gurudwaras and preachings are given on the teachings and lives of the Gurus.
