Overview

The Very Light: Sony Ericsson Zylo W20

Overview of Sony Ericsson Zylo

Sony Ericsson Zylo is compatible with 2G and 3G networks. The weight of this mobile is very light. The display screen is of 256k colors and has a scratch resistant surface. There is accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate. The alert types include MP3 ringtones and vibration. There is a loudspeaker but no 3.5mm audio jack. 2000 entries can be made in the phonebook due to high capacity of the internal memory. The internal memory is of 260MB. Call records can also be kept in the mobile. There is a microSD card slot which is expandable up to 16GB.

There is GPRS and EDGE for internet connectivity. The Sony Ericsson Zylo W20 does not support WLAN. For data transfer connectivity there is Bluetooth. It does not have an infrared port. It has a USB port. There is a 3.15 MP camera too. Geo-tagging and video calling are two of its exclusive features. It can make good videos too. Messaging options include SMS, MMS, Email, IM and Push Mail. The colors in which it is available are Jazz Black, Chacha Silver, Swing Pink, Energetic Black, Meteorite White and Nebula Red. It has motion based and downloadable games and stereo FM radio with RDS.

Sony Ericsson Zylo Design and Build Quality

The 2.6 inch Walkman device has a slider keypad design that looks like the standard design for a Sony Ericsson. It is a pretty chunky device that is bulkiest in the back portion. Sony Ericsson didn't have ergonomics in mind when it built this device. The weight of Zylo is 115 grams.

User Interface and Comfort to Use Sony Ericsson Zylo

On the home screen you will find soft key links that take you to the Media app and a web search widget. There are other widgets available as well, though most people will end up only using the Facebook and Twitter application. You can change the theme if you want to change up the style of icons and background. In addition, you can switch the menu between grid and rotating 3D view.

Telephony and Phonebook

You can attach photos to your entries in your address. Up to 2000 entries will be plenty for almost any person's phonebook.

Messaging and Emails

Text messages will appear in a threaded view that will make it seem more chat style. There is also picture message, email, push email, and instant message capability.

Gallery, Photo Viewer and Video Player

All your media will be found in a central location on the Zylo. You are able to browse your stored albums as well as link via the Facebook application. Video files in MP4, H.263, and H.264 can all be viewed on the device.

Sony Ericsson Zylo Music Player and FM Radio

This is an arena where the Zylo should be very strong in performance. In fact, Sony Ericsson has put a feature called FLAC that is proclaims to give the best sound quality on a mobile phone. FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec that is an audio format that is capable of high quality sound reproduction. In order for this feature to work, the requirements for the songs are must larger than other formats found in iTunes.

A song can take up to 10MB per song and you will need to purchase a microSD card in order for this to occur. The Zylo can take a card up to 16GB in size. Instead of a 3.5mm head jack, you are stuck using the provided headphones that are provide for low-quality sound. Overall, the music quality is just OK and that is below expectations for the maker of the iconic Walkman.

Sony Ericsson Zylo Camera and Image Quality

A modest 3.2 MP camera will take adequate pictures. You have a few options such as panorama and burst mode that you can also play with.

Video Camera and Video Quality

Video recording is an available feature and you can upload them straight to YouTube from the device. Its decent video output at 640 x 480 at 30 frames per second.

Sony Ericsson Zylo Connectivity Options

2G networks on GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900 are all supported. In addition, there is 3G HSDPA 900, and 2100 support. USB, Bluetooth, and GPRS are also supported connectivity options.

Value for Money and Verdict

You can get your hands on the Zylo for Rs. 6400 (approx., may vary). A vibrant screen will make the Zylo enjoyable for everyday use. It is an easy to use device with good multimedia options other than the camera. The FLAC was disappointing and it is not the audio powerhouse you would expect. But in the end, the device is very solid and well-priced.
